Photography's costs collapsed and its markets went with them. A digital body removed the price of every frame, which changed both how photographers shoot and how much, while the editorial budgets that once funded long assignments have largely gone. Documentary work is now more often self-funded and published as a book or an exhibition than commissioned by a magazine. Print sales, teaching and commercial commissions underwrite the personal work for most photographers, and that split is rarely advertised.

A series can be published as a series here rather than broken into unrelated uploads, which matters for documentary work built over years. The caption carries what the photographer chose to say about the frame, and the artist page behind it carries the rest of the body of work rather than a single portfolio-piece impression.
