Theatre is made in companies and paid for in fragments. A production assembles a cast, a designer, a stage manager and a dramaturg for a run of weeks and then dissolves, so a career here is a sequence of short contracts rather than a position. Devised work has grown relative to text-led staging, which changes who is in the room while a piece is written. Fringe festivals remain the main route to visibility, and the cost of taking a show to one is a real barrier.

A production is made by a lot of people at once, so the work here credits the company rather than a single name, and each of those names carries its own artist page. Runs are short and the listing is built around that: dates come from the companies and the venues, and they go up while the tickets are still live.
