Portrait and Street Photography, Barcelona

Photographs taken in and around Barcelona, and across the rest of Catalonia, by the people who shot them: street, portrait, documentary, editorial and fine art, on film and digital. An image opens at full size with the notes that came with it, and most of it belongs to a longer series.

The city has been photographed so much that the work is avoiding the postcard. What is here goes elsewhere: flat interiors, half finished building sites, markets at opening time, the beach in January. There is a good deal of performance photography, rehearsals in dance and theatre, and a good deal of portraiture shot in the sitter's own home.

A print, a commission or a question about how a frame was made all go to the photographer, whose email sits on the artist page one click from the image. That matters here because a lot of the work moves on small commissions, from a venue, a company or a magazine, and those are never advertised anywhere.

Wet darkrooms have not disappeared here. Plenty of people still develop black and white and scan afterwards, and it shows in the grain and in how the frame is cut. A lot of entries carry the whole series rather than the one prize frame, each image numbered and dated. Video, audio and text upload into the same album, so a sequence with sound is not left out.
