Contemporary Sculpture in Barcelona

Sculpture made in workshops around Barcelona and across Catalonia: cast bronze, carved stone, welded steel, high-fired ceramic and wood. Each piece is uploaded by the artist who made it, with dimensions, material and several views, because no sculpture can be judged from a single side.

Sculpture made here carries the place with it. There is a long tradition of Montjuïc sandstone and of wrought ironwork applied to buildings, and people still carve and still weld at that scale. Alongside it sits small-workshop ceramic and work assembled from industrial offcuts out of the old factory belt.

A work page takes images, video, audio and embedded clips, plus whatever text the sculptor wants to write, and video gets used here more than elsewhere: a piece that turns or balances has to be seen doing it. From any piece you reach the maker's page, where the email, phone and website they chose to publish are listed. You write to them yourself.

Size counts for more than it looks in a city of narrow stairwells and small lifts: a two-metre carving and its maquette read identically on screen and will not fit in the same room. Read dimensions, weight and edition before you write to anyone about a piece or about a commission for a particular space.
