Animators in Barcelona, Frame by Frame

Animation is built frame by frame, individual held images stacked into movement, and Barcelona Artists lists the animators making them across the city, in two-D, three-D, stop motion and motion graphics. Nothing skips. Each profile carries a reel, finished pieces, a short biography, and whatever contact details the animator chose to publish, so a viewer reaches them directly rather than through the site, and reading any of it needs no account at all.

Inside that word animation sit distinct crafts. Two-D character animation is drawn or puppeted frame by frame to carry a face and a performance; three-D work builds a rigged model in software and moves it through a scene the render calculates; stop motion photographs a real object one nudge at a time, so gravity and light behave the way they actually do rather than the way a program decides; motion graphics choreographs shapes, type and logos rather than characters, and gets hired for a different job than storytelling does.

Training for the drawn side of animation runs through La Llotja, teaching art in the city since 1775, and Escola Massana in the Raval; neither is animation-specific, but both feed the drawing hand animation still needs even inside three-D software. Working space concentrates in Poblenou, where former industrial buildings now hold much of the city's studio space, including Hangar, a production centre built for exactly this kind of ongoing practice, and in the old textile mill Fabra i Coats in Sant Andreu, which now houses studios and a creation centre.

Before commissioning, watch a reel past its opening seconds: character weight and timing hold or they do not, and for stop motion it is worth asking directly about the puppets and set that will actually shoot.
